Why This Giant Crane Had to Cut a Ship Into Eight Pieces

The engineering behind the film

When the Golden Ray capsized off Brunswick, Georgia, in 2019, rescuing the people aboard was only the beginning. The car carrier was lying on its side with thousands of vehicles inside. Removing it required a way to cut and lift the wreck in sections.

The salvage used the VB-10000 floating crane, custom lifting lugs and a cutting chain threaded beneath the hull. Seven cuts divided the ship into eight sections. Every cut changed the structure and the next lift, while a broken chain and a fire interrupted the work.

The film follows the rescue, the stability problem identified by the NTSB, and the removal operation. It combines real archival footage with explanatory animation. The video cover is editorial artwork based on archival images, not an unmodified historical photograph.

Another way to see the world.
